How to Convert Audio to MIDI: When It Works and What to Edit After

Decide whether your recording can become usable MIDI, then clean the notes before you arrange or export them.

How to convert audio to MIDI depends on what the recording actually contains. A clear hummed or played melody can become notes you can retune, retime, and assign to a new instrument. A full mix usually cannot. The conversion extracts performance instructions, not a copy of the original sound.

The MIDI Association describes MIDI as a language for notes, timing, and instruments rather than audio. That is why a converted file can sound like a piano even when you hummed it, and why a messy conversion is a note problem, not a mix problem.

Decide From the Audio You Already Have

Start with the part of the file you want to keep as notes. Do not start with the converter name.

Ableton's audio-to-MIDI documentation makes the same split inside a DAW: melody, harmony, and drums are different commands, and isolated instruments convert more cleanly than a mixed track. A browser converter that listens for pitched notes is closest to the melody path. It is not a drum transcriber, and it will not turn a commercial mix into a clean lead sheet.

Choosing whether a recording is ready to convert to MIDI or needs isolation first

Use a Browser Converter or Stay in a DAW

Stay in a DAW when you need a job the browser path does not offer:

  • Editing transients or warp markers before the notes are written

Ableton's manual also recommends uncompressed, high-quality files and notes with clear attacks. Soft swells and lossy, low-bitrate files are harder to read. If you already work in Live, Logic, FL Studio, or Pro Tools, their built-in converters can be the shorter path. A browser tool is not a replacement for those commands. It is the path that does not require opening a session.

Convert Only a Clear Pitched Line

Prepare the file before you blame the transcription.

Use a section with one clearly pitched line. Cut the count-in, the cough, and the room chatter if you can. If the melody is buried under chords, a second singer, or television audio, record that line again by itself. This is the same isolation advice Ableton gives for better conversion quality.

Then convert the clip. On LumiMusic, choose the audio file, wait for the notes to be written, and listen to the MIDI against the recording at a matched level. The first pass is a transcription to review, not a finished part.

The exported MIDI file currently uses a 120 BPM header. That is a playback tempo for the note data, not a detection of your recording's tempo. If the phrase feels rushed or dragged, change tempo in the editor or your DAW before you quantize.

Edit the Notes Before You Arrange Them

Open the result next to the recording. Fix the transcription first. Sound design comes later.

Check these in order:

  1. Phrase edges. Extra notes often appear at the start or end of a line, or where a slide was heard as a second pitch.
  2. Wrong neighbors. A slightly flat or sharp take can land a semitone off. Correct pitch before you build chords on top of it.
  3. Chopped sustains. One sung note may become several short MIDI notes. Join them when the recording was clearly one event.
  4. Missing quiet notes. Soft endings and notes that fade in are easy to miss. Add them only if you can hear them in the source.
  5. Timing. Nudge a few late notes. Do not snap every note to the grid on the first pass. Rigid quantization can erase the timing that made the phrase feel like yours.

The MIDI editor can change pitch, length, velocity, and tempo, then export a standard MIDI file. It does not mix audio, tune a vocal recording, or replace a DAW. If you need those jobs, export the cleaned MIDI and continue there.

Isolate, Re-Record, or Stop Converting

The MIDI follows the beat instead of your melody. The converter heard the louder pitched material. Isolate the line with a stem splitter only if that part is already in the mix and you have the right to adapt it. Re-recording the melody dry is usually faster.

The piano-roll is a cloud of notes. You probably fed it a mix or a thick chord voicing. Convert a single line, or use a DAW harmony command if chords are the point.

Drum hits became random pitches. A pitch converter will invent notes because it is looking for frequency, not kick/snare classes. Do not keep that file. Tap the rhythm in the editor, or use a DAW drum-to-MIDI tool.

You wanted the original timbre. Stop. MIDI will not restore the voice, guitar amp, or room. Keep the audio for the sound, and use MIDI only if you need a different instrument to play the same notes.

Confirm You Can Use the Recording

Convert recordings you made, files you have permission to adapt, or material whose license allows the MIDI you plan to keep. In the United States, a musical work and its sound recording are separate copyright-protected works. The U.S. Copyright Office musician guidance and its circular on derivative works explain why a downloaded track is not automatically free to transcribe into a release.

Unclear rights need advice for your jurisdiction and release plan. The rest of this article assumes the audio is yours to use.

What “Done” Means

You are done with this decision when the next step is obvious:

  • Convert the clear line you have, or
  • Isolate or re-record that line, then convert, or
  • Stay in a DAW because you need harmony, drums, or session-level control, or
  • Stop converting, because the audio—not the notes—is the keeper.
